Ahahaha did you see what I did there?!? For those that don't quite get the joke, I will explain further down the post, that I promise you. For those that get it, I am sure there will be a few more puns as we move along. Recently, as I have been scrolling through the pages on Facebook, I kept having this add pop up talking about these running sunglasses that look super awesome and are more cost-friendly than other brands. I had to find out more. As a recent college grad who has priorities, running sunglasses that cost an arm and a leg really aren't in the budget, and I find that most running sunglasses look a little goofy, but thats coming from someone who rocks the aviators most days. After clicking on their link, it took me to their page full of fun colored shades with ridiculous names such as Flamingos on a Booze Cruise, Doggles for My Hellhound, and Nessie's Midnight Orgy. I want to start this off by saying this was the first time this race had ever been run. As many people know, first time races can have a lot of kinks and problems that the directors can learn from and make the future races that much better. Many of us tend to only look at these negatives and complain about the things we didn't like, I hate to admit, but I have done it as well. Something we need to keep in mind is to make our opinions, positive or negative, beneficial to the race directors so they can make the race even better for the following years. I shared my thoughts with one of the race directors that I know, and now I share them with you all! Im sure you've heard the story before. Either you have tried it yourself, you know someone who has been going for a while, or you've heard of the people who have gone for years. Im talking about run streaking, which is when you run at least a mile every single day. Now, its not for everyone and can be very taxing on the body to repeatedly put everything through that much stress if you arent in the best shape. Trust me, I learned this first hand, but I will get to that shortly. But for those who can streak and have been streaking, I commend you. For those who are interested, I would say give it a try. Listen to your body though, it will tell you when you can continue and when you should stop.  For me, I started off wonderfully on November 20th. I had been going to the gym with my mom every morning and started off by warming up on the treadmill, which I could hit at least a mile before finishing my workout. Detroit Free Press International Half Marathon October 15th, 2017 Detroit, MI 13.1 This year was the 40th running of the Detroit Free Press Chemical Bank Series, and my first time running the race. I found out about the run back when I worked at the running store and had seen a flyer about it. Of course, I was curious, and had to look it up. When I found out that it crossed international borders, I had to run it. So, last year, when I was visiting my friend in Ann Arbor, I drunkenly made the agreement to run this with her the following year. Fast forward to 2017, I signed up with my sister and my friend, and we got to running it. Here are my thoughts and experiences. Me and the Sister pre-race. Overall, this was a great race. John Penning 5k July 22nd 2017 Dubuque, IA 5k This was the second year I ran this race, (however it was the umpteenth time I have ran at this course since xc in high school). For a quick description of the course, its a cross country course at a soccer complex. There are three laps that each runner completes, (which yes, it can get repetitive), but each lap is slightly different than the previous, each having a long gradual hill that you must climb to get back to the top. There are short, steep, hills that take you from soccer field to soccer field, so the course gives a varying challenge to each runner. Also, the entire course is on grass, which can be a change if you are a runner who only trains on concrete. However, this does allow people who have spikes to dig them out of the closet and take them for a spin. This race is a fundraiser for a local high school's cross country teams.
